Conspigacy theories and the Influenza Song

Posted in Swine flu by Ruth on April 27, 2009

Felipe Calderon, the Mexican president, went on TV this afternoon to confirm the existence of the influenza and to tell everyone to seek medical help if they showed symptoms.

This is very good as conspiracy theories are epidemic.

One is based on the fact that the director of the Anthropology Museum has caught it. Obama had a highly publicised dinner at the museum last week. He was the target, they say.

Another is that the government is trying to prevent the usual pandemic of strikes on May 1st, Labour Day, by scaring everyone into staying at home.

Perhaps the streets are a little less crowded than usual but they’re not empty. And many families were out today, some wearing masks – I’d estimate around 30%.

There is already an influenza dance and an influenza song. “Cumbia de la Influenza” can be roughly translated as follows:

“Why do they say it’s the perfect flu, it’s the perfect flu and they don’t know that the chilango (Mexico City person) lives under the smog

This is the news of the day, the influenza has arrived and they must buy all the medicine to face the battalion

Get out of the capital, everything is going to explode soon … we will all be dead when Indiana Jones gets here”
